House of the Year 2011 Award Winners:
New Homes $450,000 – $600,000
Cavalier Homes aim to build real homes for real people – and that is exactly what they have created in this sought-after idyllic rural area of Invercargill.
This single-storied, three bedroomed home was drawn-up to reflect a heritage-style villa typical of the 1920-30s era and has been put together with a timeless colour scheme to match.
Materials had to be considered and chosen carefully as they had to reflect the 1920-30s style of the home and also had to be maintenance free.
A slate look roof using Bristle Prestige tiles and a Firth Rockface exterior cladding with quoins were chosen to emphasise the strength and firmness of the structure and white pointing common to early 20th century architecture was also used. The aluminium windows which were fitted reflect the style of the wooden windows used during that era but retain the benefits of modern joinery.
All the Aqualine Gib walls and ceilings were waterproofed and tiled, with the wet floor tiles and fittings in the bathrooms chosen to match the elegant style of the house.
The house was also rotated 15 degrees west off north to gain as much passive solar energy as possible.
T&G panelling dominates this massive kitchen which also boasts a feature fireplace and granite bench tops.
The 305 square metre home also has a separate office, two living areas and is heated by a wood burner and heat pump.
